Professional and Community Education
Let's face it: the experience of having an addiction or mental health issue is miserable, and part of the problem involves the way professionals are taught to act towards their clients, not to mention the way family members are told to act towards their loved ones. How do we change that negative mindset?
Our idea is to develop education and outreach programs that wipe out old unworkable assumptions about people receiving services. We aim to reset the way system funders, medical professionals, and social service workers regard the people they serve. And we intend to give family members the tools they need to be proper allies supporting a person's recovery.
We call our approach "practicing nonstigma." It is education based on reality, recognizing people as individuals, supporting a person's strengths (not just symptoms), and supporting the person's goals for coping with whatever medical condition the person is facing.
We are starting things off with a webinar series about peer support -- what it is today, and how it must change for the future. Don't expect the same old same old.
