Smart Safe Healthy... is peer support everywhere
Where should support come from?
Clinical systems can take a person only so far. But health happens in the community, and support in the community is what really matters. Human beings have supported each other through every sort of difficulty throughout the entire history of our species. Support was not invented, it is normal and natural. There is value in clinical practices, but systems that emphasize clinical interactions and don't find ways to incorporate support from ordinary people are, at a minimum, out of balance, and at worst are counterproductive. Some systems are adapting, by adding paraprofessionals like case managers, peer support workers, and community health workers to their mix of personnel. Unfortunately, many times these workers are functioning as "light" versions of social workers and counselors. Something is lost when paraprofessionals operate from office cubicles and concentrate on documentation. They lose their capacity to act as informed friends. How do we get our priorities back into order? The answer is to unleash the capacities of friends and neighbors, and teach the community how to do its work. Contact us to learn more. |
